Inaugurating the Spring 2022 New Major Awards

The Department of Art Practice is thrilled to inaugurate the Art Practice New Major Award, an unrestricted $500 monetary award in recognition that early support of undergraduate students can make a difference. Along with the creation of the Materials Quik-Grants in Spring 2021, the Art Practice New Major Award signals a shift in securing that Art Practice undergraduate majors working in any discipline have multiple funding sources they can apply for. Each Spring, two students will be selected to receive the New Major Award, and each Fall, four students will be selected.

New Major awardees are automatically considered from all undergraduate Art Practice major applicants in a given semester. No separate application is needed. The review committee looks at student portfolios and written statements for evidence of creative promise and purpose.

For Spring 2022, the inaugural New Major Award recipients are Shaelyn Dalziel (BA’23) and Sana Khan (BA’23) who will each receive $500.

Honorable mention goes to Karyl Dimaculangan (BA’23) and Hudson Kramer (BA’23).

Congratulations to this first group of talented students!

Art Practice major applications open again in September 2022, and a total of four students will be chosen for the Fall 2022 New Major award.

Shaelyn Dalziel: “For Waldo,” 2022, oil on canvas, 11”x14”
This piece is the start of a series where I challenge the idea of a portrait by focusing solely on certain aspects of the subject’s body beyond their facial features.

My idea of art has always been to tell a story. Making the audience experience the story is what makes the explaining process worthwhile to me. Whether it’s through photography, video, sculpture, drawing, or music composition, I love exploring different disciplines to reach all five senses in my storytelling.

Most of my illustrations focus on portraiture and figure drawing. I like to capture the language and emotions we express through our bodily forms. Though I work mostly with graphite and digital media, I enjoy exploring different mediums as well.
