The title of this exhibition refers to the considerable challenges Art Practice students have faced in creating artwork remotely, often working in their bedrooms and other domestic spaces. They have all shown perseverance and ingenuity in negotiating uncertainty with living/work space, lack of access to regular departmental art tools and facilities, and Zoom burnout, not to mention the horrific tragedy of the pandemic, which has disproportionate effects on low-income communities and communities of color.
Student artists have responded to this situation through their artwork in wide-ranging ways; sharing their unique experiences, creating valuable documentation of this historical moment, offering deeply personal reflections on their identities and ways of being, providing the release of play and fantasy, sharing self-care strategies, and envisioning, demanding, and taking action to realize a more just, equitable, and healthy future.
Note that graduating seniors who were enrolled in Prof. Stephanie Syjuco’s Fall 2020 Senior Projects course were featured in a catalog Paradigm Change (free pdf download), with an online exhibition curated by Jaz Bryant, and a virtual tour created by Eugene Meg Kim with Joann Kim.
