Remote viewing is a term specifically used to describe the use of clairvoyance or psychic spying by the US military in formerly secret programs like STAR GATE. For the purposes of this talk, we are interested in the history and rhetoric of this topic in order to better understand the work of artist Tyler Coburn and his collaborator, artist and poet Ian Hatcher, whose work leads to larger questions about how to be virtually present in a space distant from our bodies, and the role of technology and technique in these experiences.

Students are urged to engage in reading about remote viewing with a dose of skepticism, but are also encouraged to approach these readings with an open mind, and to acknowledge that all human experiences are inherently valid, whether or not they align with consensus reality.

The Fall 2020 Worth Ryder Art Gallery Internship Program is excited to present a series of talks by artists, curators, and publishers that supplement the gallery’s experiments with remote display techniques and technologies.
