Gallery Internship Art Talk Series Presents
Destinee Ross-Sutton
Open to All UC Berkeley Students
Email gwazda@berkeley.edu for Zoom link (deadline: 10am, day of)
Attendees are asked to please review relevant readings before talk
Curator Destinee Ross-Sutton will be discussing her mission as a curator and her virtual exhibition Say It Loud: I’m Black and I’m Proud at Christie’s auction house. She will speak not only about the artists in the exhibition, but about the way the art world continues to exploit Black artists, and the steps she has taken to counter this.
In the readings you will note that 100% of the proceeds of the Say It Loud auction went to the artists, which is unusual in the art auction market. Importantly, she is asking collectors to sign a contract that discourages “flipping” (the exploitation of artists by treating their artworks like speculative investments), and enables artists to generate income from secondary market sales (i.e. re-selling art).
The Fall 2020 Worth Ryder Art Gallery Internship Program is excited to present a series of talks by artists, curators, and publishers that supplement the gallery’s experiments with remote display techniques and technologies.
